The Spirit of the Place. Every person and every organisation has a character of its own, and it matters online as much as it does in the everyday world. I’m Robert, and I build websites that let that character show: who you are, what you care about and why it matters, so that the people who find you come to know you a little.
My background is in advertising, web development and project management, education and cultural engagement, design and photography. I’ve been building for the web for a long time, and I enjoy working with the tools of the modern web: WordPress and Elementor, hand-written HTML, CSS and JavaScript, careful animation and interaction, and making sure a site can be found. What I enjoy most is helping something worth sharing to be understood.

Brand identity, product design and a full homepage design for an AI visibility analytics platform, which shows business owners whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and others name them when customers ask.
A site for an ethnomusicologist’s project on music as a resource for community wellbeing, mainly in the permaculture world, with a reforestation project in Casamance, Senegal.
A long-running scholarly site and forum on the history of tarot, welcoming to beginners and serious researchers alike.
An interactive deck of fifty-four cards on twelve historical English cunning folk, researched from court records, pamphlets and folklore, and made to turn their world into something playful to explore.
An art project exploring the Spirit of the Place and the experience of the numinous in everyday life. It deliberately blurs the boundaries between memory, history and imagination.
Designing with AI: research, websites, images, video and music.
I’m looking for work with people who care about what they make: a small organisation, school or company that could use someone who enjoys turning a hand to many things. I’d be glad to hear from you.
